Local adequacy as a design strategy in place-based making

This article examines continuing appropriation of products and materials through the term ‘local adequacy’ provides an alternative perspective on grassroots strategies exercising control over technology by (re)connecting with place its making using. To observe document these strategies, we examine areas challenging natural infrastructural conditions, where local inhabitants collectively undertake creative action for building a comfortable living environment. Three cases in remote Russia show that adequacy is formed though identities reflected both practical symbolic value products, competences allow to be used, maintained, upgraded; which makers are included broader economic technological context.
